A negative headline travels faster than a correction.
Earlier this year, Lucknow University in India made international news when plagiarism checks flagged concerns across a significant proportion of PhD theses submitted in a single year. The story spread quickly – picked up across education and research publications, shared in academic circles, debated online.
Whether the final numbers hold up to scrutiny or not – and there are legitimate questions about the detection methodology – is almost beside the point. The reputational damage was immediate. The university's name became synonymous, at least temporarily, with a systemic integrity failure. That association, once made publicly, is very difficult to undo.

This is not just an India problem
Academic integrity is under pressure everywhere. A 2025 study by Turnitin and Vanson Bourne found that 95% of the academic community believes AI is being misused at their institutions.
The tools available to students – for generating content, paraphrasing existing work, and evading detection – are advancing faster than most universities can respond. Yet access to AI grading software and AI assessment platforms that can keep pace remains deeply uneven.
In Africa, the challenge carries an additional weight. It is not a question of whether universities take integrity seriously. Most do. The problem is the gap between commitment and capacity; between the standards institutions want to uphold and the resources available to enforce them.
Many universities across the continent are still formalising their AI-use policies. Minimum thresholds for acceptable AI content vary by institution. Some have set one, many have not yet. Enterprise-grade detection tools are expensive, often priced for markets with very different budget realities. And even where policies exist on paper, the infrastructure to apply them consistently – across hundreds or thousands of submissions per semester – simply is not in place.
This is not a values failure. It is a capacity problem. And it is one that leaves universities exposed – not because they are indifferent, but because they are under-resourced in a global environment that is moving very fast.
The numbers, when you finally look
Over the past several months, GradePoint AI has been working with universities in Ghana and Nigeria to assess undergraduate assignments across a range of courses. The results have been instructive – because they now make visible what was always there.
In an Integrated Marketing Communications course at a Ghanaian university, two class groups (Level 300 or 3rd Year) were assessed. The evening session had 121 submissions: 17 were flagged for plagiarism violations and 75 (62% of the class) were flagged for AI-generated content above the university's 30% threshold. The weekend session had 89 submissions: 10 plagiarism violations and 52 students (nearly 58%) flagged for AI use above the same threshold.
At a Nigerian university, a Level 400 Political Science course told an even starker story. Of 124 submissions, 92 were flagged for plagiarism (76% of the class). And 110 students – 91% – exceeded the AI-use threshold of 70%.
"These are not anomalies. These are ordinary classes at universities that care about their standards, but which previously did not have the tools to detect these issues. The integrity issues were not new. What was new was the ability to see them."
Before these assessments, lecturers were marking the same submissions manually – often alone, without teaching assistants, under significant time pressure. A lecturer reviewing 120 scripts sequentially over several weeks has no practical mechanism for cross-referencing submissions for similarities, running AI detection, and still returning grades (and qualitative feedback) within a reasonable window. Something always gives. Usually, it is the depth of integrity checking.
Detection is not the end. It is the beginning.
There is a tendency to frame academic integrity tools as instruments of punishment. That framing misses the more important function: deterrence, and the culture shift that follows it.
When students know their work is being reviewed at a level of scrutiny that was not previously possible, behaviour changes. In the GradePoint trials above, all flagged cases were escalated for investigation. For many of those students, this was the first time their institution had the capacity to surface what was happening. They now know the oversight exists. That knowledge, in itself, reshapes what students believe they can get away with.
And the value does not stop at integrity. The same AI grading and feedback process that surfaces plagiarism and AI-use concerns also generates class-level insight. These insights include identifying shared weaknesses, curriculum gaps, and teaching priorities that a lecturer reviewing individual scripts in isolation is unlikely to see. The tool becomes not just a compliance mechanism, but a teaching one.
For universities, the reputational dimension is equally significant. An institution that can demonstrate active, systematic oversight of academic integrity – as a standard part of its assessment process, versus as a one-off exercise – is in a fundamentally different position than one that cannot. The Lucknow story was not really about plagiarism. It was about what happens when the absence of oversight becomes public.
The gap is closable
African universities are not behind. They are navigating a global challenge with fewer resources than most, while also managing student populations that are growing rapidly and an AI landscape that is shifting beneath everyone's feet simultaneously.
